4) She grew up on the Great Plains, near Alliance, Neb., where the winters are long and harsh and the living is hand to mouth.

5) Her car was sideswiped by a hit-and-run driver on Route 1A this morning. She wasn’t really injured, but the impact sent the contents of her purse helter-skelter.
