Lead #1

$150,000 in damages was awarded to a local couple yesterday who suffered injuries in a traffic accident. Butte County Court assessed the damages from the March incident that led to the lawsuit.

You've got the right idea - focusing on the money and who got it. But avoid starting a sentence with a number.
